P2453

Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What the code means

The DPF pressure signal isn't behaving as the ECU expects.

P2453 is a range/performance fault relating to the diesel particulate filter pressure sensor circuit. In simple terms, the ECU has detected that the pressure signal is not behaving as expected.

That does not automatically prove that the pressure sensor itself has failed, and it certainly does not mean the DPF should immediately be replaced.

This guide follows the same diagnostic principles demonstrated in the Speed Tweaks 2013 Suzuki Swift 1.3 diesel case: look at the data, apply a known pressure to the sensor and check whether its reported value responds correctly.

Possible causes

What could cause P2453?

DPF pressure sensor fault
Blocked, damaged or leaking pressure pipes
Carbon or contamination in the pressure pipes
Sensor power supply or ground fault
Signal-wire or connector problem
Incorrect or implausible sensor signal
DPF restriction affecting differential pressure
Other exhaust or DPF system faults

Diagnostic approach

What should you check?

  1. 1. Read the full fault memory. Check for other DPF, exhaust-temperature, regeneration or engine-management faults that may provide additional clues.
  2. 2. Look at the pressure reading in live data. Check what the ECU believes the DPF pressure is doing before replacing anything. Look for a reading that is implausible, fixed or fails to respond as expected.
  3. 3. Inspect the pressure pipes and connections. Check the pipework between the exhaust system and pressure sensor for blockage, damage, leaks or contamination.
  4. 4. Test the sensor with a known pressure. As demonstrated in the Speed Tweaks video, controlled pressure can be applied with a suitable hand pump while watching live data to see whether the sensor responds correctly.
  5. 5. Check the three-wire circuit if required. A typical three-wire pressure sensor uses a supply, ground and signal. Understanding that basic arrangement allows useful initial checks to be made even before reaching for detailed wiring information.
  6. 6. Confirm the repair. Once the actual fault has been corrected, confirm that the pressure signal behaves correctly and then assess regeneration and DPF condition as appropriate for the vehicle.

A useful thing to remember

Live data becomes much more useful when you can deliberately change an input and observe the result. Don't just look at a number — test whether that number responds as it should.
